Well, it’s almost here. The Mayan Calendar turns over on December 21, 2012.
The New York Times reports, “For those not schooled in New Age prophecy, there are rumors the world will end on Dec. 21, 2012, when a 5,125-year cycle known as the Long Count in the Mayan calendar supposedly comes to a close.”
Okay. But never mind all those stoners who believe in the Law of Attraction, as well as the end of the world. Or even Australian Prime Ministers who don’t get astronomy, archaeology and history (that was a Youtube video best forgotten). What does modern astrology say about December 21, 2012?
Pluto and Jupiter on 21 December
On December 21, 2012 there is a quincunx between Pluto and Jupiter. It is exact and takes place at 3.35am in London, when Jupiter stands at 8 Gemini 56 and Pluto stands at 8 Capricorn 56. It takes place at 2.35pm in Melbourne on Friday 21st December and at 10.35pm the day before in New York on Thursday 20th December. Pluto is about endings. It always has been. The Romans believed he controlled Hades, or the Underworld, which received the dead, ahead of their new life. Our astrology and Mayan religious astronomy are not the same. But they both tell the same story, on 21 December, 2012. That is remarkable.
Here is another ending that day. December 21st is also the end of the Sun in Sagittarius and the start of the Sun in Capricorn. It’s not the end of the world. It’s not the apocalypse. It’s not Doomsday. However, it is the close of one era and the beginning of another one.
The Calendar That Lasted 7000 Years
This is my favourite explanation of the meaning of December 21st, 2012 by Dr. E.C.Krupp (Director of Griffith Observatory). He is also a contributing editor at Sky & Telescope.
“What exactly is the Maya calendar about to do? On December 21, 2012, it will display the equivalent of a string of zeros, like the odometer turning over on your car, with the close of something like a millennium.”
The Mayans had a calendar that stretched 7000 years into the future. Also like astrologers today, they predicted solar eclipses and the movements of Venus. We also have something else in common with the Mayans, apart from a love of calendars. They wrote in black ink with red highlights. Rather like hyperlinks today. And that’s our first clue about the events of 21 December, 2012.
Pluto – the Planet of Endings and Beginnings
For an astrologer, there is definitely more to December 21st, 2012 than bad jokes about an apocalypse. But why do astrologers believe that Pluto symbolises death and rebirth, or a simultaneous ending and beginning? It’s not just the myth, which gave the planet its name. The planet was also discovered in 1930, which was the seed year for the Second World War and the atomic bomb. Both would end the old world and start the new one. 1930 was year zero for Hitler and for Werner Heisenberg, who was charged with the job of giving the Nazis the bomb.
Old world, new world. That’s Pluto.
Astrologer and author John Townley describes Pluto this way – ‘The crashing and smashing attendant to a Pluto transit is at the same time accompanied not just by a future life after death but by a continuing one right under our feet.’
Here are some more observations by great astrologers, all of which are crucial for December 21st, 2012.
‘Pluto seems to have relation to the working of the life force itself…’
‘There is an intelligent life in substance itself, which seems to be associated with the life force in living things. It is nature itself, or the life force in nature, that will survive. And in order to survive, of necessity, it must go through permutations, changes, death processes that break down forms when they have reached their sell-by date and then generate new forms.’
Liz Greene in interview with Nick Campion
‘When you come out of a Pluto transit, you are changed forever. In another state. But during the process you don’t realize what’s happening. Life can get pretty dark. With Pluto, you can’t look ahead. You can’t be impatient. Most of all, you shouldn’t be afraid, because in the end there is nothing to fear. You just have to surrender to the mysterious process of complete and total transformation.’
2006 Vanity Fair story by Michael Lutin
Pluto in Capricorn – What to Expect
What does Pluto achieve, specifically, when he is in Capricorn? He moved in during 2008 and will stay there for more than a decade. However, his aspect to Jupiter at the end of the Mayan calendar is key. Astrologer Judy Joyce says it all, about Pluto in Capricorn, on her thoughtful website.
‘Leaders, governments, business, corporations will have to go through a deteriorating process as part of the transformation. That which is no longer viable will have to die so that a new system can be born. The economy will be challenged. The way things are set up in general will become unstable……… Structures may begin to show signs of collapse. Leaders, governments, business corporations greatly increase their power or be taken over.’
Capricorn the goat as a timing symbol in astrology, is actually the mountain goat. Thus, this sign has always been associated with any system based on a hierarchy, like a typical government or corporation – which one has to climb. And the internet, too, according to Wikileaks’ Julian Assange. “[The Internet} is really is the top of the pyramid of the whole neoliberal system.”
Pluto in Capricorn and the Mayan Calendar
At 3.35am (London time) on the day the calendar is said to end, December 21st 2012, there is a perfect quincunx between Jupiter 8 Gemini 56 and Pluto 8 Capricorn 56, as we’ve seen. What else is crucial? Saturn is not far away at 8 Scorpio 37.
The Mayans knew the sign of Scorpio. We know this from a brilliant 1960 article (The Antiquity and Precision of Mayan Astronomy) by C.H.Smiley from Brown University.
In modern astrology, we associate Scorpio with the sharemarket, the economy and big business. It has a direct relationship with Capricorn. That’s two of the symbols in the sky at the end of the Mayan calendar. But what about the third? It’s actually the X factor.
The Internet, the Media and Jupiter in Gemini
Jupiter in Gemini is about the expansion and growth of the media and the internet. It is also about the solution of any problems the planet has with information. And he looms large at the end of the Mayan calendar, in a pattern that has never happened in your lifetime and never will again.
There is no evidence the Mayans worked with Jupiter in Gemini. However, they were an information based culture. Their calendar can be figured out with computer programs. And as we’ve seen, they used a highlighted form of text that would not be out of place today.
There are some classic Gemini developments in October and November 2012 which could reach tipping point on December 21st.
Should the United Nations Control the Internet?
The World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where this is under discussion, will be held from 3-14 December 2012. One week before the end of the Mayan calendar. Read more at the BBC online.
What Will Anonymous Do On Project Mayhem?
The hacker-activists (hacktivists) Anonymous have chosen Friday 21st December 2012 for Operation Mayhem.
Anonymous is a major successor to Wikileaks according to CNN. In 2012, Time magazine named Anonymous as one of the most influential groups of people in the world. They have also taken direct action in support of Wikileaks.
Anonymous encourages its supporters to use 11.11 on the clock as the chosen time for public displays of activism.
This 11.11 time is strangely in line with the events of that big day on the Mayan calendar and astrological calendar.
Consider this. At 11.12am (London time) on December 21, 2012 the Sun enters Capricorn. That’s one minute after the Anonymous deadline.
I have no idea if Anonymous has astrologers in their ranks. However, the synchronicity of the 11.11 time on 21 December is striking. And astrology (the most alternative but accurate way of seeing time, ever invented) runs on synchronicity!
Fox News, the US Election and Anonymous – More Developments?
This report is at Salon – On Election Night, viewers watched in shock as Karl Rove refused to accept the call, confirmed by Fox News analysts, that Ohio had gone to Obama. A release claiming to be from hacker collective Anonymous alleges there was more behind Rove’s freak-out than first met the eye. The group says that it foiled Rove’s attempt to steal the election in Florida, Virginia and Ohio by using the GOP’s ORCA system.
The BBC and UK Media
The Jimmy Savile l abuse scandal at the BBC arose after allegations that DJ and TV presenter Savile, who died in 2011, sexually abused under-age teenagers and children. Police investigations continue in December, about Savile and other BBC employees. As Britain’s biggest taxpayer-funded media outlet, the BBC is a huge Jupiter in Gemini concern.
Other Astrology Factors on 21 December
There is even more happening on December 21st, 2012 than Jupiter in Gemini, Pluto in Capricorn and Saturn in Scorpio creating patterns at 8 degrees in the world horoscope. This is what makes the end of the Mayan calendar so meaningful.
The Sun’s exact position at 11.12am that day is 00 Capricorn 00. At that minute it creates an almost perfect conjunction and sextile with Juno and Neptune. Juno is at 00 Capricorn 50 and Neptune is at 00 Pisces 48.
Here’s a breakdown of the astrology of the day -
The Sun in Capricorn – Illuminates, highlights and exposes all the Capricorn issues – big business, the establishment, the government, corporations. Juno in Capricorn – This asteroid describes the price of commitment. Juno in Capricorn translates as ‘married to the system’ and what that involves. Neptune in Pisces – Neptune is a symbol for the ocean which has no boundaries. It cannot be contained or controlled. Pisces is about fish – chaotic, confusing.
This is astrologer Sue Tompkins, writing on Neptune in her book Aspects in Astrology (Destiny Books, Vermont) back in 1989, when some Anonymous activists weren’t even born!
‘Where Neptune is situated or what Neptune touches tends not to accept (possibly not even recognise) boundaries, it seems as if nothing will get in the way of the attainment of the wish, dream or desire…It is the lack of boundaries that allows Neptune to seduce and it does so through infiltration.”
Tompkins wrote and published these words years before Wikileaks too – “Neptune is a significator of leaks, and leaks of all descriptions (including scandals and secrets) tend to be insidious and frightening. It is difficult to contain a leak.”
If you’re an absolute beginner with Anonymous, then watch this video
John McAfee and the Computer Virus Issue
Finally, Neptune is associated with viruses, because it times situations with a lack of boundaries. Rather like a water-born virus in the air. It’s fascinating that anti-virus guru John McAfee, of the same-name software, was arrested in Guatemala, home to the Mayan calendar, just two weeks before 21 December. Guatemala is where the world’s oldest-known Mayan calendar was found. Why there? Why now? Why the arrest, just as Jupiter in Gemini (computers) is moving towards that epic alignment with Pluto and Saturn?
The Leveson Enquiry
The astrology on 21 December also speaks volumes about the Leveson Enquiry in Britain, which focussed on the Press Complaints Commission and Data Protection Act and the urgent need for drastic reform in the UK media, following the hacking of a murdered child’s phone – as well as other issues which J.K.Rowling, among others, have raised a petition over.
More Mayan Calendar Possibilities
Concerns about mobile phone and internet service providers. There is a great deal of power invested with these corporations, as the world saw during the crises in Egypt and Syria. This fits the astrology of 21 December.
The sharemarket. In 1929 when Wall Street crashed, one of the worst-hit stocks was RCA (Radio). Back then Jupiter was also in Gemini. Today, instead of radio, we have communication mega-brands like Facebook, Apple, Google, Vodafone.
Finally, if there are extreme weather or earth changes on December 21st, these may affect the grids of particular countries – and thus electricity, the internet and all communication. And we should be realists about cyber-attack.
How Did the Mayans See the World?
December 21 brings the end of a 5126 year cycle in the Mayan Calendar (the Long Count). What on earth would have made sense to that culture in terms of the life we live today?
Ideas to focus on include their use of a hyperlink-like writing technique and the computer-friendly qualities of their mathematical systems. Also their obsession with times and dates, both of which are pertinent in the world of hacktivism, viruses and so on.
This might have interested them – 21 12 2012 and also 12 21 2012 – and of course, the chosen Anonymous action time of 11 11.
The Mayans were an information-focussed society. So is the world today. How would they have seen the internet and its importance to governments, power and corporations in 2012? These are potent questions for the end of their calendar. Will we see the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one, with computers, the web, the media?
Is Your Personal Horoscope Affected by December 21st?
If you have astrological chart factors at 8 and 0 degrees, then a part of your personality is waiting to be reborn – activated – on 21 December. Expect an ending and beginning. Not negative nor positive. Just the final paragraph on one chapter, and the first paragraph of another. Yet in a small way, your destiny will be affected by wider world events, through six degrees of separation. Call it a ripple effect. Allow for your time zone and country, but on (or very close to) 21December, you’ll be affected by those line-ups.
If you were born with exact aspects between two or more chart factors at 8 or 0 degrees then it will be quite a significant chunk of your character. Your personal chart will explain what is about to be woken up, inside you.
As a rough guide, if your birthday falls on these dates, or 24 hours either side, there is a strong likelihood you will be personally affected by 21 December. However, to be sure, you must check at www.astro.com.

Wider Reading on the Mayan Calendar
There is an excellent explanation of what I would call Mayan ‘astrology’ (cultural astronomy) here, in Robert K.Sitler’s feature in 2006 in The Journal of Alternative and Emergent Religions, published by University of California Press.
I promise you it will be free of bad jokes and hippie doomsday scenarios.
But seriously, please take 21 December 2012, seriously. It’s a new era for information, media and the internet, around the world.
